We count ourselves lucky here at Snoozel Green, as when we set out to create our unique eco-mattress in 2018 we didn’t realise the strong bonds and friendship we would make with our suppliers along the way.
Each factory, farmer and supplier supports our goal to create high quality, health focused, eco-conscious and socially responsible mattresses, all at a fair price for everyone involved, including you. We are proud to say we can guarantee that all of our mattresses are handmade in our Sri Lankan factory using natural and certified organic materials, without the use of toxic chemicals, fire retardants or petroleum-based polyurethane foams. The team at the Sri Lankan factory are passionately working towards a goal for carbon neutral status, they are making the steps towards official certification, with each process currently under extensive review to ensure safety of the workers and the planet.
Today in our factory focus, we spoke to the team over in Sri Lanka regarding the latex production, from the trees to the mattress, as latex is a key element in the Snoozel Green eco-mattress, and it’s all natural of course!
We’re proud to say the factory, and our latex mattress has recently undergone an LGA test, with the top result of 97/100 . But what exactly is a LGA test and what does it’s results mean to you?
This LGA report is administered and run by TUV lab Germany, a global provider of technical, safety, and certification services. The LGA test checks the compliance of the mattress with the functional performance for the domestic use of a mattress, (DIN EN 1957 standard). Every mattress on sale to the public has to pass the test by 50/100, otherwise the LGA marks it as unsuitable and it doesn’t get the certification. This protects your health, and avoids any mattress scams that may occur, when purchasing a mattress it is highly advised to check for LGA certification.
The LGA test was designed to test durability and quality, with a technique used to simulate ten years of use to track how the mattress ‘ages’ over time. They tested this by putting roughly 150 Kilos on our latex foam block and stroking the latex foam for 60,000 times. This is then broken down, judged and rated with a score out of 25 in the following four categories:
- Height - how this changes over the time of the test
- Hardness - noting the change of hardness of the mattress after 30,000 strokes
- Hardness - monitoring the change before and after the test is complete
- Resilience - noting a change of the resilience factor of the mattress
The results are then tallied, with 50 points as the pass mark, 70 points for increased quality certification and 80 points for enhanced quality. Our mattress scored 97 points. A top score, and a sign of outstanding quality. We’re so pleased with this result as it shows the care that has gone into the construction of the Snoozel Green mattresses from all of our team. From our original idea, to the expertise of our Sri Lankan factory, we care for your wellbeing through sleep and the wellbeing of the natural world we call Mother Earth.
Notes on our latex:
We use 100% natural, tree tapped latex which is blended with the natural mineral graphite to ensure the mattress is fire retardant. Absolutely no chemicals go near our latex during tree growth and manufacture.
Our latex begins its life in Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) approved groves in Sri Lanka. Harvested by hand every two to three days from Hevea Brasiliensis rubber trees under the FSC framework, which lays out strict rules which protect the water quality, prevents the harvest of rare, old-growth forest, reduces the unsustainable loss of trees and the use of hazardous chemicals.
As our latex is completely natural it is less likely to cause allergic reactions.
