What Does GOTS, GOLS, and OEKO-TEX Actually Mean?

What Does GOTS, GOLS, and OEKO-TEX Actually Mean?

If you’ve ever browsed for an organic mattress or bedding, you’ve probably come across a string of certifications: GOTS, GOLS, OEKO-TEX, and more.

But what do these labels actually mean? Are they all the same? And how do they protect you as a customer?

Let’s break it down.

1. GOTS: Global Organic Textile Standard

GOTS is the gold standard when it comes to organic textiles like cotton and wool.

To be GOTS-certified, a product must:

  • Contain at least 95% certified organic fibres

  • Be processed without toxic chemicals (like bleach, formaldehyde, or heavy metals)

  • Be produced in factories that meet strict environmental and social criteria

Why it matters: GOTS guarantees that your sheets, mattress covers, and other fabrics are truly organic, free from harmful residues, and made in ethical conditions.

Snoozel Green only uses GOTS-certified organic cotton in our mattresses and bedding.

2. GOLS: Global Organic Latex Standard

GOLS certifies latex products made from organically grown rubber trees.

For latex to meet GOLS certification, it must:

  • Contain more than 95% certified organic raw latex

  • Be free from synthetic fillers and foaming agents

  • Be manufactured in socially responsible and environmentally safe facilities

Why it matters: GOLS ensures that the latex in your mattress is not only natural — it’s also organic, non-toxic, and responsibly sourced.

At Snoozel Green, our organic latex mattresses use only GOLS-certified latex, sustainably harvested and processed in our own factory in Sri Lanka.

3. OEKO-TEX® Standard 100

OEKO-TEX is a safety certification that screens textiles for harmful substances.

To receive OEKO-TEX certification, a product must be:

  • Tested for over 100 harmful chemicals and residues

  • Safe even for babies and those with sensitive skin

  • Verified by independent labs

Why it matters: OEKO-TEX is not an organic standard — but it’s a powerful assurance that the product is free from harmful levels of toxins.

You might find OEKO-TEX labels on:

  • Pillow covers

  • Mattress toppers

  • Conventional fabrics claiming skin safety

Snoozel Green prioritises GOTS and GOLS, which go beyond OEKO-TEX by addressing not only toxicity but also sustainability and ethics.

What These Certifications Don’t Cover

Certifications aren’t a silver bullet. They don’t guarantee fair wages, minimal packaging, or carbon neutrality unless explicitly stated. That’s why we go beyond certifications — owning our factory, sourcing locally, and ensuring full supply chain transparency.

How to Spot Greenwashing

Some brands use misleading language like:

  • “Made with organic materials” (without saying how much)

  • “Eco foam” (usually petroleum-based with small plant oil content)

  • “Natural latex” (often a blend with synthetic rubber)

If the label doesn’t specify GOTS, GOLS, or OEKO-TEX — ask questions.

We build everything to meet the highest international standards, not just in materials but in ethics:
